How to open an account

Opening an account is easy

To open an account with Servus Credit Union, you must purchase a minimum of $1.00 in common shares. This makes you a member-owner!

You can open an account however is most convenient for you: online or in-branch. 


Opening an account online is a simple process and will only take a few minutes. We'll ask for some personal details including your Social Insurance Number (SIN), a valid email address and a phone number.

We partner with Canadian credit bureaus, who will be using your information to help us confirm your identity. These partners are trusted national guardians of personal information such as your name, address, social insurance number and credit card details and other information that we may use to confirm your identity. The information being validated is already in their files and will not be shared with anyone.


Here’s what you need to bring: your Social Insurance Number card and two pieces of identification, one of which must be photo ID (see below for examples of acceptable ID). You must present the original ID, not a photocopy. Expired identification is not accepted.

Bring at least one piece of ID from the following group:

  • Valid Canadian passport

  • Canadian birth certificate

  • Canadian driver’s licence

  • ↓ Government of Canada issued ID:

    Certificate of Indian Status

    Old Age Security card

    Military ID card

    Canadian Citizenship card or Certification of Naturalization

    Permanent Resident card or a Citizenship and Immigration Canada form IMM 1000, IMM 1442, or IMM 5292

    Canadian Firearms licence

  • ↓ Provincial or territorial ID card issued by:

    Alberta Registries

    Saskatchewan Government Insurance

    Insurance Corporation of BC

    Department of Service Nova Scotia and Municipal Relations

    Department of Transportation and Public Works of the Province of Prince Edward Island

    Service New Brunswick

    Department of Government Services and Lands of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador

    Department of Transportation of the Northwest Territories
    Department of Community Government and Transportation of the Territory of Nunavut

    Provincial or territorial Health Insurance card (cannot be used in ON, P.E.I. or MB

If two pieces are not available from the above list, then one piece of ID from above list and one piece of ID from the following list may be accepted:

  • Employee ID card with a photo, from a known employer
  • Student ID card
  • Debit card or bank card with name and signature on it
  • Canadian credit card with name and signature on it
  • Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) client card with photo and signature on it
  • A valid foreign passport
